The Clown

The Clown

i reach out for beauty and she shuns me

dancing off on ballerina toes

leaving nothing but the work

to lighten

the ever-dimmer darkness between the wane of long hours

as i toil

away

quietly

slipping lonely into the night with the taste

of spirits on my breath

with a painted smile

and brushed on cheeks

cursed with a laugh

both bright and dying on my lips

cultured for the grassroots

and practiced

to ease the anguish

of a world in sorrow

if i have made you giggle

then i have lived

if not well

then maybe well enough
