Compact

 Compact

Oh yes,

 I miss you, too,

 the distance is traumatizing.

 Try as he might

 he could think of nothing to say

 like that to his best friend.

 Fierce and loyal to the compact to resist

 the childhood bond to death;

 the covenant between his wife and him.

Curling his legs,

puffing at his pipe,

desolate and dazed,

he said nothing,

just stared blankly at his phone.
