Twilight, New Haven

Twilight, New Haven

How readily the soul delights in

the frosted glow of lamplight,

when all the world seems to pause –

perplexed perhaps – by a sudden

abundance of ornament as waves

of ruby-throated violet envelop

the sky, spreading above and beyond

the boughs, falling in delicate demise

not from but thru the clouds, befriending

air, unspooling like a bolt of silk that’s

become embedded in trees and unfurls

into the brooding, communal dark

between buildings, carpeting courtyards

and dimming what appears to be candle-

lit windows, while the muffled peels

of church bells bleed out to echo and

hang in autumn air just a few hours shy

of frost long enough to console, lift

and nearly heal our hearts before the

settling of life back into the fetid musk

of yet another lost November evening.
