The Loss

The Loss

The pain is as clear as yesterday,

my heart leaping in shock,

the sourness of loss in my mouth,

the ice cream splattered

on the cement pavement,

the smeared cornet held dejectedly

in my drooping hand,

the other boys gleefully jeering,

how hard I missed an older sister

to share hers.
