Lament

Lament

Eugene collapsed onto his chair, the only one in the house without fabric.

“You’re gone Mamie,” he grumbled. “You dotted your I’s with little hearts, fixed hot chocolate with tiny marshmallows in summer, and rubbed the soles of my feet when I came home from work. You loved this old codger.”

Tears escaped his eyes and followed the weathered creases of his cheeks. Burying his face in his grease-covered hands, he sobbed the words “I miss you.”
