South of Kilimanjaro

South of Kilimanjaro

Just south of Kilimanjaro,
The day began to close,
Filling the place with fading light.
I decided best to camp here,
So picked out a rocky place, -
Where the silence would be disturbed –
By the sound of ‘things’ approaching,
Or the slithering of snakes.
The night sky followed quickly,
And produced a million stars,
That seemed to flicker just beyond my reach,
I lit up my little primus stove,
Aware of strange noises in the shrubs below –
Made some strong Tanzania coffee –
As the moon, just like a spotlight,
Picked out the distant mountain top, and its reflecting glint of snow.
