 Communiqué from Goud

An eight-year-old girl sits,
makes paper dolls
on paint-spattered table covered with supplies.
Mid-morning sun creates her dust mote halo
in a Saturday art studio.

Bottle-bottom glasses and braided pigtails
greet everyone with the same salutation,
I see you!

I pique her guarded curiosity.
She pauses her single-minded pursuit,
looks up, repeats,
I see you!

I smile.
Playfulness guides my response—
I see you, too!

Confused, she pauses
before her wandering, brown eyes become
re-absorbed in her inner-world building.

Confused, I wonder
who it is that she sees.
