A Short Graveyard Chat

Gabe and Scott walked through the gates into the small cemetery.  The interior was crammed with tombstones, both old and new.

They walked up to one of the very newest, and stood respectfully off to one side.  Gabe commented, “She had so much energy.”

Scott nodded agreeably, “Indeed.” “Even late at night, she was always pacing.  Wore me out to watch,” said Gabe.  “Makes me tired

just thinking about it right now,” answered Scott. “I was always amazed at how she had never met a stranger”  remarked Gabe.

“That’s true. I felt right at home with her from that very first introduction,” added Scott. “I’m going to miss all those cheerful greetings.”

“Well, we’d better get going,” said Gabe while he lay some fresh daisies on top of the mound.  They walked back toward the front gates

and noticed their friend, Jonathan, standing there, leaning against the stone wall.  Jonathan almost didn’t acknowledge them, then Gabe spoke.

“Jon, we’re so sorry for your loss.”  “Thank you, “ Jon muttered.  All three stood there silently for a minute.  Finally, Scott spoke up.

“She sure had a lot of energy.” Jonathan smiled a sad, brief smile.  “Yeah, it’s hard to imagine her now being so still,” said Jonathan as he began

to head toward the grave.  “Bummer,” said Scott to Gabe as they walked away.  Gabe nodded. Jonathan was too busy with his memories to have

heard Scott’s last word and nod also. He was also too busy trying to stay on his feet as he neared his dog’s fresh grave.
