The Apogee and Perigee of Us

The Apogee and Perigee Of Us

My own mind’s light directs me to the here and now,

to which I must attend.

Your contribution to the eclipses of my mind

pulls my thoughts disadvantageously toward the over there,

toward some murky future.

Apogee. Perigee.

We don’t live within Don McLean’s opus,

so there’s no need for me to believe in:

the rupture of a compass,

the aberrant pitch of the horizon,

shadows on stars,

or lost stanzas of a poem.

I’ll decide my distance, close or far,

to the wanton flotsam,

spewed from your once charming ship,

which sank long ago.

I’ll decide

the extent of our separation,

which I alone now control.

Apogee. Perigee.
