The Way We Live Now

The Way We Live Now

I told her trouble lurked outside the door, ready to pounce,
ready to destroy her life without a warning.
I locked the door to keep her safe, but she found the key.

She forget the lesson, the one my mother taught me
and I’d passed along to her like a treasured brooch.
That the best protection lies inside the family.
That family is the best way to survive.

That once you lose connection, life is cold.
That even the deepest cave won't keep you safe.

  1. Rings true like the best shorter works.

  2. Very true and I'd like more of the briefer poems. This one is refreshing.
